Bowhunters, I need your help.

I want to bowhunt next year.

Traditional versus Technological? Compound versus recurve? Stalking versus treestand?

Give me some advice, some links, and some feedback.

I know so little about the sport that I can't even really put together enough proper questions at this point.

I shot for a while back in the scouts but that's been many years back and I'm not sure I was very good then either...

Thanks,

B

Bri,
Not sure I can really contribute to this as bow-hunting is illegal in UK and I can only go by 3D target field shoots. In this case I prefer traditional bare bow (no sights or add-ons) as it's more challenging. However, you might want to consider the following:
Compound bows are more expensive but more accurate and you can get a more powerful draw for the same effort as a recurve.
Recurve and traditional are less expensive, but you have to get close to the target. 5 meters or less will ensure a clean kill and thus less suffering to the animal.

Five meters?! I'm going to have to work on my stealth.

The only time I get that close to the deer around here is by accident.

3D target shooting, if set up properly, could be great fun. I'd love to give it a try.

Thanks,

B

With all due respect, I think bushcraft is ALL about respect for nature, witch includes no killing/destroying for "fun". This I might add is or should be the first rule of bushcraft.

Frits,

I'd advise you to go back and reread the post and the comments. Never did I advise killing/destroying anything for fun.

However, if you look back to the times of our ancestors I can assure you that they did, indeed, hunt and kill animals for food, clothing, and tools.

Hunting, to me, is as much about the respect for the animal as bushcraft is about respect for nature.

Thanks for stopping by,

B

If you're looking for some info about bowhunting, shoot me an email. I currently bowhunt with a recurve, but used to hunt with a compound. I'm sure I can at least point you in the right direction.
