I found this video this morning on YouTube and think it really does a good job of covering the identifying characteristics of a fatwood stump.

If you're in an area with old growth pine trees you're likely to find your own lifetime supply of fatwood.

"Fatwood" is an unfamiliar term here in northern NH. I will check out coniferous stumps in this area to see if this occurs in species that grow in these colder climates.

I don't know if other tree species will leave behind fatwood-like stumps and would be interested to hear just what you find.
