OUCH!

So, I've had some foot problems recently and it turns out that I have plantar fasciitis which is basically tendonitis in the bottom of the foot.

I have pain when I put my feet down after a night's sleep or even after sitting for just a few minutes.

Was this partially caused or exacerbated by the new shoes? Maybe.

What I'll tell you is this:

Avoid it if you can. Take care of your feet.

I had the same problem for years. Good arch supports would help for a while, but the pain would eventually come back.

I haven't had any foot pain since I started barefooting a lot 5 years ago. Seriously, going barefoot has been the best thing for my feet. I still wear shoes a lot since I live in Iowa, but I were them as little as possible in the summer. If I do where shoes, I try to stick with something wide and thin soled. My faves are Vans classic slip-ons or cheap-o wal mart flip flops.

I have it in my right foot and the wrong fitting shoe is the worst. It's also worse in the cold/winter. Normally I just wear pedifix support around that foot when it gets aggrivated. Be sure to take care of it, it's a painfully long healing process. I would also agree with Joe, barefooting will help or check out barefoot style shoes.

I've managed to keep mine at bay for a few years now, after suffering with it for a few years. It would be aggravated when rock hopping or chasing kids over soft ground like grass or snow - activities which over-stretch the affected area.

What I do: Stretch your heels and ankles for a few minutes EVERY MORNING before getting out of bed.

Good shoes/arch supports/insoles are important-I've stopped buying cheapo shoes from sprawlmart.

I NEVER go barefoot or wear slippers anymore, though it may work for others, and is worth a try if you're in pain. While researching this on the net, I learned that some U.S. doctors call it 'flip-flop disease', and blame poor footwear.

It really sucked having that problem, and I'll be doing this stuff the rest of my life to keep it in check. I'm glad my pain is gone. Good luck.

Most big drug stores have foot braces specifically for plantar fasciitis. They hold your foot in the over-extended position, so the tendons wrapping your heel will stretch, and stay stretched. Ideally you're supposed to sleep with it on, though it's a bit uncomfortable in the long run.
